Halitosis – Bad breath

November 17th, 2011

Fresh breath is important to everyone and not least when you get up close and personal. Bad breath (halitosis) is incredibly off putting and very difficult to handle for all concerned. While most cases of halitosis are related to a cause within the mouth there are other, rarer sources of halitosis.

Bad Breath in the morning is something many people complain about. The most common reason for “Morning Breath” is because during the night when sleeping the mouth becomes very dry.

Other causes for bad breath are foods like onions or garlic, smoking,  alcohol intake and obesity.

The most common causes of Halitosis are gum disease and tongue coating. Bacteria in the mouth break down proteins that release gases that cause the unpleasant smell. Therefore bad oral hygiene is the main culprit for Halitosis and with effective tooth brushing, inter-dental cleaning and using a tongue scraper could very easily resolve the problem.

Other causes for bad breath can include a post-nasal drip, sinusitis and some stomach diseases. Always seek professional advice to find the cause of Halitosis.

If you have any concerns about suffering from Halitosis contact a member of the Creative Smiles team by calling reception on 02890 618545 or alternatively you can email info@creativesmiles.co.uk

‘ABB’ Align, Bleach & Bond

July 4th, 2011

Another Top Result Using ABB at Creative Smiles in just 6 Months!

This young lady from Belfast came to see us at Creative Smiles as she hated the prominance of her upper right lateral incisor tooth.  She was also concerned that both of her central incisor teeth looked short in length as opposed to her lateral incisor teeth.  She was not happy with the colour of her teeth.     She was unhappy and aware of  her teeth all of the time especially when looking in the mirror and getting her photograph taken.  This was having a knock-on affect on her confidence.
We carried out an in-depth assessment of our patient and spent time with her discussing all her available options in great detail.  After discussing the options we decided to Align her teeth with a Brace, Bleach then Bond.
The Inman Aligner brace was fitted to align the teeth as this young lady wanted a brace that would work fast and could be removed to eat and clean her teeth.
The Teeth were Whitened on completion of the alignment process using Home Tray Whitening.
The Smile Make-over was completed by using a technique called ‘Cosmetic Bonding’ to reshape, contour and lengthen the front central incisor teeth to create a more balanced smile!
This Treatment took just under 6 months.  How powerful is the concept of ABB!
Resulting in another Happy, Confident individual who no longer dreads having her photograph taken!
Please contact our patient Care Co-ordinator Leanne should you wish to make an enquiry on 028 90 618545 or alternatively you can email her directly to leanne@creativesmiles.co.uk

Choosing the Right Gum Shield

June 28th, 2011

A gum-shield is an appliance you wear in your mouth if you play a sport that involves contact to the mouth e.g. rugby, soccer, boxing, hockey etc. The first report of gum-shields being worn was in boxing in 1913, even then it was realised that this simple device reduced the incidence of knock-outs following blows to the jaw. Gum-shields are also know as sports-guards or mouth-guards. They are designed to protect the teeth and surrounding tissues from trauma. It does this by absorbing the pressure of the trauma and distributes it evenly over the whole jaw minimising the risk of injury. In addition it will also protect the lips and cheeks from laceration against the teeth.
There are different types of gum shields but the 3 main categories are:

Off the shelf gum-shields which are ready to use, can be used a temporary while waiting for a custom made gum-shield. Unfortunately they are a poor fit as they are designed to fit all mouths which are not all the same! They easily drop out and are sometimes uncomfortable to wear.

Boil to fit gum-shields. These are made of thermoplastic material and can be softened in boiling water then put into the mouth to shape. They are better than off the shelf ones due to the fit, again they can fall out easily and can be a bit fiddly to mould.

Custom made gum-shields are the gold standard gum-shield. They offer the best protection as they are made to fit exactly to the patients teeth. Numerous studies have shown between 80 and 90 percent reduction in dental injuries by wearing a custom made gum-shield. They remain fixed, never wear out and are tough enough to resist the toughest blows. They come in a variety of colours, stripes and checks.

Come along to see us at Creative Smiles so our staff can advise which gum-shield is best for you!

Dental Implants

June 27th, 2011

This lady below had worn an upper acrylic Denture for many many years.  She thought that she was too young to be wearing dentures and hated the fact that she had to remove the dentures at night time and in order to clean them and her surrounding teeth.

She came to see us to discuss what alternatives she had to her denture and after a comprehensive assessment and discussing the patient’s needs in-depth we decided to place 2 upper front implants holding 4 upper front teeth as well as a third implant on the upper left pre-molar region to close the gap on the left hand side.

She is delighted with the result, is far more confident with her smile  and no longer has to remove a denture from her mouth as she has a permanent life long fixture just like what her original teeth were!

Dental Implants at Creative Smiles

June 23rd, 2011

Today, losing a tooth or indeed several doesn’t mean that you have to either live with the gap or wear dentures. Advancements within the field of dentistry are giving patients more choice. Dental implants offer a safe, permanent and aesthetically pleasing alternative to simply putting up with second best when it comes to one of your very best assets, your smile.

Dental implants at Creative Smiles are rapidly growing in popularity, and with good reason. They are strong and permanent replacements for missing teeth, and many of our patients are now choosing to have these instead of bridges or dentures.

Four out of five people in the UK are unhappy with the way they smile, and 20% of us are so unhappy that we hide our teeth when being photographed.

Once in position, an implant can hold a single replacement tooth, a bridge or a denture with several replacement teeth. The real benefit is that they are virtually indistinguishable from your own teeth, which means you can enjoy an attractive and natural looking smile once more.

What is a dental implant?  Implants are essentially replacements for the natural roots of teeth which are used to hold a replacement tooth or bridge in place. The benefit of using implants is that they don’t rely on neighbouring teeth for support, they are permanent and stable.

If you are missing one or more teeth and wish to eat your favourite foods, increase your chewing ability and improve your appearance, speech and self confidence then you could be a candidate for having dental implants placed here at Creative Smiles.

Implants are a fantastic solution to tooth loss because they look and feel like natural teeth and neither you nor anyone else should be aware of the implant.

Benefits:

Here are some of the reasons patients of Creative Smiles go for dental implants:

They look natural – dental implants look and feel good and with modern technology, dentists can achieve results that look exactly like natural teeth.

Comfort – a dental implant is such a good tooth replacement, that you don’t even remember it’s not real.

Durability – dental implants offer a permanent solution to tooth loss. They bond to the jaw bone and become part of it, this connection is as strong as a natural tooth root. The completed dental implant is as strong and durable as a natural tooth.

Improved oral health - since treatment with dental implants involves placing implants in areas where there are no teeth and does not affect your other healthy teeth, more of your own teeth are left intact, improving your long-term oral health. Additionally, by placing implants in areas with no teeth, you stimulate the bone area again and prevent long term bone loss in that area. (When a tooth is lost, the bone is not stimulated and begins to shrink away).

Improved hygiene - Individual implants allow easier access between teeth, enabling everyday normal dental care, and in that way improve oral hygiene.

So why not contact one of our Creative Smiles Team today to arrange an assessment ? Or alternativley if you would like to know more call and speak to our Patient Care Co-ordinator Leanne Hynes who would be delighted to help!

SMILE MAKEOVER USING ‘ABB’

June 22nd, 2011

ABB ‘Align, Bleach & Bond’

Another Top Result Using ABB at Creative Smiles in just 8 Months!

This lady from Ballinderry, Lisburn has been a longstanding patient at Creative Smiles and on every routine 6 monthly review appointment she has always mentioned that she hates her teeth.  The  alignment, colour and shape of her teeth were all a major concern but she felt she could never take the step to go ahead and do something about it.  She worried about having to wear a brace.   She was unhappy and aware of  her teeth all of the time especially when getting her photograph taken.  This was having a knock-on affect on her confidence.
We carried out an in-depth assessment of our patient and spent time with her discussing all her available options in great detail.  After discussing the options we decided to Align her teeth with a Brace, Bleach then Bond .
The 6 Month Smile (Fixed Brace) was fitted to align the teeth as this lady wanted a brace that would work fast and the tooth coloured brackets and arch-wires made it more discreet than a conventional fixed brace.
The Teeth were Whitened on completion of the alignment process using Home Tray Whitening.
The Smile Make-over was completed by using a technique called ‘Cosmetic Bonding’ to reshape and contour the front teeth!
This Treatment took approximately 8 months.  How powerful is the concept of ABB!
Resulting in another Happy, Confident individual who no longer dreads having her photograph taken!

Dental Facelifts

June 15th, 2011

Having Cosmetic Dentistry can have a positive effect on your overall facial  profile. The case photos below show this very well.

This middle aged lady’s face (as you can clearly see from the before photograph) has collapsed.  This is due to resorption of bone and wear of her old lower upper and lower dentures.  This results in skin folds which have a very ageing effect.

We used Dental Implants here to stabilise a new set of upper and lower Dentures.  By doing this it allowed us to increase the height of the ladys dentures to remove the skin folds and rejuvinate her face restoring it to what it would have been in her early twenties!!

Smile Makeover using ‘ABB’

June 8th, 2011
6 Month Smile Makeover using ‘ABB’
This young lady from Lisburn came to Creative Smiles as she was unhappy with the alignment of her front 4 teeth, the gap between her 2 front teeth and a chip out of her upper left central incisor tooth.  She was becoming aware of her teeth all the time and constantly comparing herself to other peoples nice smiles.  This was having a knock-on affect on her confidence.
We carried out an in-depth assessment of our patient and spent time with her discussing all her available options in great detail.  After discussing the options, together with the patient, we decided to Align her teeth with a brace, Bleach then use the Cosmetic Bonding Technique to finish.
The Inman Aligner Brace was fitted to align the front 4 teeth as this young lady wanted something that was going to work quickly and was only concerned with her front 4 teeth.
The Teeth were Whitened on completion of the alignment process using Home Tray Whitening.
The case was then finished by using a technique called ‘Cosmetic Bonding’ to reshape and contour the front 2 teeth to complete the Smile Makeover!
This Treatment took approximately 6 months.
This young lady is delighted with her result and no longer picks faults in her smile when looking at other people anymore!
