Sports drinks and Energy drinks are becoming more and more popular these days but what a lot of people don’t realise that both the drinks have extremely high acid levels. These levels undoubtedly cause irreversible damage to teeth by eroding their protective enamel layer.
Enamel is the outer layer of the tooth and is a very important part of the tooth structure. It is the hardest tissue in the human body and does not regenerate once damaged. Enamel’s function is to provide daily protection from daily wear and tear, it also helps prevent teeth from sensitivity from hot or cold drinks.
Tooth Erosion occurs when the acid in the sports/energy drink attacks the enamel and wears it away, this in turn leaves the teeth unprotected leaving it open to long term damage.
To limit the risk of Enamel Erosion we recommend that you greatly reduce your intake of sugary/acidic drinks. After consuming such drinks DO NOT brush for at least 30 minutes as this can cause further damage, always rinse your mouth with water and chew sugar-free gum to increase saliva flow.
Some Signs for Spotting Enamel Erosion:
Sensitivity of the teeth,
Dips or roughness on the front surface of the teeth,
Discolouration of the teeth.
