Visiting The Dental Hygienist Is Good For Your Heart!

Visiting the Dental Hygienist is not only good for the health of your gums and teeth; it could also protect your heart. Researchers have found that those who have their teeth professionally cleaned and polished at least once a year cut their risk of a heart attack by nearly a quarter. They are also 13 percent less likely to have a stroke compared to those who have never had the treatment.

Not brushing properly causes plaque to build up on teeth, which in turn leads to gum disease. Bacteria from the plaque and mouth can enter the bloodstream via the blood vessels in the gums. This is thought to cause inflammation of the artery walls, which can trigger heart attacks or strokes. Another theory is that the bacteria again entering the bloodstream via the same method contribute to the buildup of fatty deposits, which can also lead to heart problems.

Scientists have known for several years that the condition of teeth and gums is strongly linked to the likelihood of heart problems.
